Tell us about your boutique salon and why you call it a ’boutique salon’.
Its independently owned and operated. This makes it truly unique for people who insist on the extraordinary. Kimberly Coleman Salon is a relaxing home away from home. The décor features an urban design and the relaxed welcoming spirit suggests an intimate hideaway. We offer gentle comfort from a cheerful team of stylists.
Some salons and stylists only care about the end result, what made you decide that your focus should be on health and not trend?
First, healthy hair begins with effective exercise, eating right, drinking water, taking vitamins. Then you should take care of the hair with regular shampooing, conditioning, and hair treatments.
Trends come and go but healthy hair is in year round. It never goes out of style!
Are there any common mistakes that African American women tend to make when it comes to their hair?
I think that women in general put everyone and everything before themselves. Time is not made for self. By the time women come to see a professional stylist it’s too late. The most common mistakes are too much blow drying, using curling irons frequently, and perming the hair to often. When wearing weaves women generally don’t maintaining their real hair and when it comes to coloring they don’t follow correct procedures.
What are some solutions?
Taking better care of self and hair. Learning about your hair and the proper treatments. Focus on treating recurring problems such as dryness, thinning hair and baldness.
What other services does Kimberly Coleman Salon offer?
We offer nail care, lashes, hair rejuvenation kits and treatments as well as massages and facial services. Next door to us is the wonderful designer Barbara Bates as well as other established local businesses.
What do you love about Chicago?
First off the shopping! I love that. You can find any and everything in Chicago. Secondly, the people. Its so many different cultures that are welcoming and nice. Last is the great food. Whatever you want you can find.
For 2009 what are some of your goals for the salon and yourself?
Take the salon to a bigger level in the industry and personally to be a better wife, mother, and person.
