American Violet

(Nicole Beharie, Alfre Woodard, Xzibit)

This film is based on the true story of a young woman, Dee Roberts (Beharie), from the projects who was indicted based on the uncorroborated word of an informant in a case led by a shady district attorney. You think she was a bit upset???

People I’m telling you right now– this isn’t “Set it Off”…and it shouldn’t be. However, this is a film that talks about a real issue going on in a real town right here in our country. I think this movie is pretty bad ass…but not in an in your face way. It’s good to see a spectrum of stories on screen that involve women of color. I hope we see more from up and coming actress Nicole Beharie. All the actors really give outstanding performances (yo Xzibit– I love “Pimp My Ride” but I don’t get MTV2) but it’s all still believable…you can tell Hollywood didn’t get their hands on this film. That being said, this is an independent film so you may not have seen ads for it and it’s only playing in three Chicago theaters (River East, ICE Chatham, and Century 12 Evanston).

Best Showtime? What the heck…date night (I usually don’t hand my date night ratings out willy nilly but it’d be cool to see this film do well in theaters.)
